Knowing your place

Bom had a baby boy. She knew to those she worked for it was rather insignificant, but River was Brian's second child and of course, the name was his idea.

Bom liked it. She understood. After all, it was a time to stay home and nest. Naturally, she knew it didn't mean much to Keanu's grandmother (Ivy's mother) who was always concerned about his needs as much as she was concerned about Ivy's new baby.

"Are you sure you have any time for Keanu at all," she made Bom feel a little guilty yet sad.

"I think so." Bom shrugged thinking Keanu liked the baby. He was the affable type. He hadn't said anything to Bom about the matter. After all, they were very close and of course, he talked to her more than Brian ever did.

Yet, she knew Ivy's mother was their savior. She made sure that she and Brian had decent jobs at her boyfriend's company. It was all in the family, so to speak. Yet, Ivy would have nothing to do with her mother nor the company.

Bom would never dare to ask why. Then again, Bom felt closer to Ivy's mother. After all, they kept in contact every day. And she was getting the feeling she was needed back at work.

"Well, you knew they weren't going to give you a  year off or anything," Brian told her this was no time to think she was some kind of princess. She was just an employee. Bom knew he was right. She was just an employee who so happened to be the step-mother to someone's grandchild.

Of course, she found herself taking up for River now. "What's going to happen once I go back, and I can't be there to hold him when he.."

Brian shrugged. "He'll be fine. I have a feeling Keanu will tell us if anything goes wrong." After all, the child care was right there where Bom worked.

He gave her a hug. "I understand that you don't want to go back, but they depend on you more than you know." She was a number cruncher and always prepared reports in a timely fashion. And she was great to fix a computer in a glitch. "You'll be OK. River will be OK."

He reminded her about their real dream. They wanted to buy their own home, and it might happen soon.

  12. You describe Bom's dilemma so well; I can really feel her angst about going back to work and being away from her baby. To that end, the baby pics in the collage are so sweet! Also, the panda. :)

I'm glad you're enjoying your TC Boyle books. I know what you mean about needing to change gears when you're reading. If I read too much fluff in a row, then I feel like I need a challenge. But if I read a bunch of heavy stuff, then I feel kind of drained. So I usually alternate to keep a nice balance. It's nice that the Boyle books, although, serious "have some hilarious tones." Sometimes a little levity goes a long way! :)

  14. Having a young family can be exhausting. Still feeling like an outsider can be hard too. I do feel Bom deserves more. And I can understand how she has to stand up for her child when she feels no one else will. Possibly, father's don't sense this or feel it isn't as important. Naturally, they are both extended family to Ivy's mother. It is interesting how they do work with in the 'family business' while Ivy chooses not too. She herself resents the fact that her parents divorced. Definitely a complicated family.
