"Oh, I'm so fat," Alison said and Vanna only winced back wondering if she'd always felt this way about herself. How come she didn't know? Her sister was voluptuous and confident.
"What's wrong with you?" Vanna bounced back the question. "You're perfect."
"And you're my sweet little sister who can put down anyone, but me," Alison looked over at Vanna and sipped her black coffee. They were chilling at Vanna's alone.
"I don't know what you're worried about," Vanna shrugged. She didn't get it. Alison had a new boyfriend who was a good eight years younger than her with a great job. In Vanna's book, her sister was queen. She knew how to choose them, while Vanna wasn't so sure about herself. After all, Koda had his quirks and he definitely wasn't made of money, but he was being paid by the CITY now at the Senior Center and still managed to be a short-order cook at the Old Main Street diner on weekends.
"Maybe I need a breast reduction," Alison then mentioned how her back hurt all the time.
"I dunno," Vanna shook her head. That sounded drastic.
"I do all these exercises," Alison told her. "Some are supposed to reduce...you know.." she sighed. "But nothing has helped."
Oddly, Vanna was beginning to think she didn't know her sister at all. This was the first time Alison had ever talked about herself this way. Usually, she was all sunny smiles and everything was great in the world.
"Well, see what Keir has to say about all this," Vanna went back to her milk with a little coffee in it.
"Oh, I wouldn't burden any of this on him," Alison looked as if she was frightened at the thought.
"Look, it's good to be as open as you can, early on," Vanna nodded. "You know, if he can hang around for all your troubles, you know he's a keeper then." Vanna gritted a smile.
Not that she'd been all that open with Koda, but she had a feeling he knew her bitterness as much as her happiness. She was no wallflower.
Nice getting into Vanna's head a bit!

ReplyDeleteHola! me gusto mucho el capítulo. Besos
ReplyDeleteI agree with Christine: we all have body issues! I'm glad Alison opened up to Vanna about hers and hope she can talk to Keir, too. Vanna's right about keeping things real. Even if she does think this in your as-killer-as-ever ending: "Not that she'd been all that open with Koda, but she had a feeling he knew her bitterness as much as her happiness. She was no wallflower."
ReplyDeleteSometimes body and body shape issues makes one mad! Hope Alison's decision is right (about breast reduction).
