Brick almost walked right into Izzy without even thinking. True, she normally wasn't out looking in the produce aisle. It was not her territory. He backed away and went as far as he could back to the pet food aisle.
Yes, he was hiding. He had nothing to say. It was best that way. Yet, he hated it. He did. He just didn't want to upset her.
"Excuse me," someone said they needed help. There was something on the top shelf they couldn't reach. Cat treats.
Of course, Brick looked everywhere before he noticed the petite girl was practically beneath him. He looked at her wide-eyed. It was like she wasn't even real. Her hair was albino white. He couldn't help but stare. Was she not of this world?
"Sorry." They both said and she smiled exposing her slightly crooked teeth.
He sighed.
"My cat loves those treats," she said.
He nodded as if he was not meant to say a word to her but to somehow study her in these few minutes. He did as she said. Of course, it took a bit to figure out the right one. But it was done too soon. Although, he could not let go of the box. It was as if she'd put him in a trance of some kind.
"Who are you?" He wanted to know. She grinned more.
"Oh, silly Brick, I see you in the lunchroom all the time," her voice was practically a cartoon.
"What?" He winced. How was she not on his radar? Oh, he'd been Izzy's far too long. Evidently.
"It's Harley. I'm in your PE class." She told him.
"You are?"
She held in a laugh.
"You must really be going through a bad time," she tilted her head as if she might know a thing or two about him and Izzy.
He shook his head no and finally handed her the box of cat treats, but she caught his hand just at the right moment and wrote her phone number on the palm of his hand.
"Call me," she said. "I'm one of the few who still likes to talk on the phone."
Ooh!

ReplyDeleteWhoa! Another lady is after Brick in a big way! Oh, she's a vixen for sure, with that scene-stealing line: "Call me," she said. "I'm one of the few who still likes to talk on the phone." I'm interested to find out if she'll be too much for Brick -- or exactly what he needs.
ReplyDeleteThat's so cool how you cut out my flowers and put them over the stripes! The combo of patterns and colors is so fresh and fun. Your collages are endlessly inspiring!
I also enjoyed hearing about the pickle juice snow cones at your state fairs! That's a new one for me, but maybe it's a staple in the Midwest? Also, you should definitely wear your floral purple pants to work! They sound awesome, and life's too short not to. :)
