It gets hard to know what to think

Why was this happening? Rafe couldn't believe his eyes. There was Lily with Brick. It didn't seem possible. Of course, he didn't make a scene. He stayed in the back, practically hiding from both of them. The next thing he knew Lily was off her shift and didn't even say goodbye.

"Is anything wrong?" Valentina asked. She'd boxed up a mistake of a sandwich for him and loaded him down with some fresh lemonade that would not be fresh tomorrow.

"Oh, I guess it's nothing." He looked a little hurt. He thought they were on the same page most of the time, but sometimes, it felt as if Lily was in another book, not just another chapter.

"You guess?" Val almost gave him a snicker. "You better find out."

"You saw her with Brick?"

Val nodded. "They go way back. They were kids then. She probably thinks of him as another brother."

"Another brother?" It was like it gave him a bad taste in his mouth.

"You know, he's seeing that orange-haired girl." Val crossed her arms as she leaned against the doorway of the bakery kitchen. "She looks like trouble. I'm sure he needed help from Lily."

"Right." Rafe nodded, thinking about Cade then. He knew of Cade's black-eye, but he was being aloof. Somebody from school told him who did it. He just couldn't see Cade involved with her. She was definitely not his type.

He sensed it was best to find out what was going on with Lily and Brick. Maybe it was nothing. He didn't want it to be anything. After all, he was tired of working. Summer hadn't been all that fun. He spent every weekend with Lily at the Farmer's market. It had been all work and no play. Was it just him? Maybe Lily sensed it too. But she never said anything. He had no idea what was really on her mind. But then again, he'd kept quiet.

Rafe hated this sinking feeling. What if this, whatever it was.. with Lily...was coming to an end?

  11. And now we hear Rafe's side. I think he's right in thinking that something may be off with him and Lily. It was nice to see Val again too. I love the way this sentence sounds: "She'd boxed up a mistake of a sandwich for him and loaded him down with some fresh lemonade that would not be fresh tomorrow." Also, Val's offhand mention of Brick and Harley is gold: ' "You know, he's seeing that orange-haired girl." ' Ha ha! 🧡

Love the Starry Night swatch in the collage! 🌟
