"Can we talk?" Brick had wanted to say that to Lily for a very long time. And as it was, no one was waiting in line at the bakery. It was at a lull at almost three in the afternoon. Brick winced, hoping he hadn't said it wrong, but he probably had. "There's something that's been on my mind, but..but it's not about you."
"Oh." She nodded then as if maybe she could help. She showed him to the back booth and brought both of them an iced coffee. Although Brick so wanted cream in his, he didn't ask as he wrapped his fingers around the plastic cup and made himself take a sip.
"I..I am not sure what to do," he pressed his lips as he plunged into this conversation with Lily.
"About what?" She looked at him as if he must be thinking of a garage sale or something, not girl troubles.
"It's about Harley." He knew he needed to pick up the pace. Lily didn't have time for him.
"Harley?" She looked at him as if he was predictable, after all.
"Well, she..she did this thing," Brick didn't really want to explain it.
"Oh, when she hit Cade in the eye." Lily nodded.
"You know about that?" He asked, but then figured she would since she was seeing Rafe. "Well, she had this disagreement with Cade. It seems he said he was Rafe and took her to some dance that her dad paid him. He paid..." Brick quoted with his fingers then, when he said RAFE. "Close to a hundred bucks to take her out to dinner and a dance. She really thought she was going out with Rafe, but then she...she knew she wasn't. Cause Rafe never said a thing to her, after that. Well, she said she just thought he was the cold stoic type after all, but then she felt every time she was around Cade, that..well, it had to be him."
"God, he might as well be a gigolo," Lily said under her breath. She looked as if she was bitter about Cade too.
"What?" Brick winced hard as he tried the pungent iced coffee again. He was trying to get used to the flavor. Just as he was trying to get used to talking to his ex-girlfriend Lily. Although, in his mind, she would never be his ex, but always his first love.
"Cade is so weird. I dunno what to make of him, you know." Lily said about Rafe's twin brother.
"I want her to apologize to him," Brick nodded. "She shouldn't have done that to him."
Lily agreed. "But he does seem to bring out the worst in people. Rafe and Cade are always fussing about something."
"It's just, I dunno how to get that to happen." He told her.
"Well, we can only do so much," Lily said it was a good idea, but they both have to talk. "Cade needs to apologize to her too."
"At first I thought breaking up with her was the only answer, but we..we talk so much. And..and I thought I knew her," Brick said. "I want things to be OK with us. Yet, I'm kind of afraid of her."
"That's no good, either." Lily looked at him ever so seriously. "You don't deserve that."
Brick almost choked on his coffee then. He cleared his throat. It was good to be friends with Lily and yet he thought this might be the last time they ever talked to each other.
"I'll see what I can do." Lily shrugged. "It would be nice if we could all get together. Cade, too. Do you know anyone who would go out with him?"
Brick thought he might be dizzy. He'd never thought of that.
Interesting conversation!

Great post! Have a nice week!
ReplyDeleteOh, Brick and Lily. Glad they had a talk.
ReplyDeleteRafe and Cade - twins. Well, dating twins might always be a trap with unpleasant consequences.
ReplyDeleteThe twins, Harley, Lily, Brick should definitely have an apology talk.
Interesting
ReplyDeleteOh, so that's what Cade did! "Cade needs to apologize to her" Yeah, I think he does. No wonder... nice convo between Lily and Brickster as well.
ReplyDeleteApologizing would be a good thing to do.

Hello!! great chapter, as always.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!!
This was such an enjoyable read! Brick and Lily's dialogue is so good, and the subtext is spot on. From Lily's gigolo comment to looking at Brick as if he's worried about a garage sale instead of a girl, it's all very clever -- yet real. Still, this is my favorite part: ' "What?" Brick winced hard as he tried the pungent iced coffee again. He was trying to get used to the flavor. Just as he was trying to get used to talking to his ex-girlfriend Lily. Although, in his mind, she would never be his ex, but always his first love.' That really gets to the heart of things, doesn't it? Because even if Brick works things out with Harley, she's no Lily.
ReplyDeleteThe Sonny and Cher pic in the collage is so cute and funny! 😀🎵
