"Well, you never said we'd be sleeping together," Oakley gave Dory the eye. How could she not know it would come to this? She could walk to work and the music hall was only a block away. There were just so many conveniences. She should have known it would be too good to be true. She was furious.
"Oh come now, it's not like we're strangers," she followed the skinny fellow from room to room. The ceilings were so high. Even the windows were ancient. It wasn't a luxurious apartment.
"But..but.." She wanted to say NO. Although, it was too late. Everything was falling into place. Her family thought she was finally successful.
"Finn has his own room. He's the one who pays a good chunk of the bills. It's his place. I needed someone who could-" He sighed heavily.
"Leave it to you to be the lazy one," Oakley bumped into his back, thinking why had she ever drunk that red wine with him. He was the one who got sick and she helped him from ruining that night they played at last year's summer concert. Had he thought it was something else, even back then? Yes, she knew he wasn't always charming. He was hot a mess.
She winced, wondering how to get out of this. But wasn't this where she wanted to be. She could play her cello. She could still be content moving forward with her creativity. Didn't that weigh out the misery?
"Do you cook?"
"No."
"It figures." Dory then said Finn was amazing with eggs and veg. "I hope you like those things, because that's about all we eat around here."
Oakley remained even-lipped. Dory gave a whole new meaning to starving artists.
Great post 😊

I've got the feeling that Dory and Oakley are going to be a good couple , despite the 'eggs and veg' cloud over the head.
ReplyDeleteOh, the second half is my favorite!

Moving forward creatively often does outweigh misery! But then there's that brilliant last line about Dory being a starving artist that makes you stop and think, wait, now, does it?! This is beautifully written and complex as always -- just like life. 😀🎻🎨🥚🥗
By the way, I'm so glad to hear that the Friends of the Library pulled out all the stops. You deserve it! 📕📙📒📗📘💖
