Emily cringed at the thought that she was face to-face with Yuki's old girlfriend. How could this have happened? Oh, right, she felt as if she might be losing her mind lately. She hated to put the pregnancy test on the counter. It would be her fourth one in a week. Maybe the tests were wrong. She bought some prenatal vitamins just in case. Yes, just in case.
She had no idea what to say to Axton. Yes, it was true. It was her own damn fault. Possibly the condoms were expired and thus faulty. She'd had them before the pandemic. Oh, she'd done her best to make this work with him. But it just felt like a lost cause. She really felt nothing for him. And it made her feel even more guilty of the outcome, but what could she do?
"I thought you..you and Yuki-" Remi started, but stopped.
Emily was practically in tears.
"Look, I'll be off in fifteen minutes. Why don't look at the summer makeup? I'll be over and..and maybe we could talk."
She nodded. It would be good to talk to someone about the situation. Finally, Remi came around with a little bag of free makeup samples. She brought juice too and they went outside to the park nearby.
"I know you like her, what happened?" Remi was so insightful that even Emily couldn't speak.
"How?" Oh, she felt the sudden urge to want to throw up, but she didn't.
Remi shook her head. "You two just can't get on the same page, can you?"
Emily pressed her lips tight. She was supposed to hate Remi, but now it felt as if she was visiting the ghost of her grandmother who always laid it on the line.
"You know you two are good for each other. You were there to help her. I know she'll help you too." Remi sat next to her on the park bench while Emily sobbed.
"I don't know what to do," she sniffed back tears. "I really wanted to, you know, make this work. Be who..who my grandmother would want me to be."
"Now did she leave you a book full of instructions?" Remi looked at her all serious. Finally, she burst into laughter and Emily found herself laughing too. "Maybe..maybe this was supposed to happen."
Emily did her best to nod.
"You need to tell Yuki everything," Remi told her.
"But..but she..she has someone now," Emily told her that was why she'd gone on with things with Axton.
"I know she'll be there for you, no matter what," Remi nodded.
A tickle got caught in Emily's throat. She did her best to smile, but really she thought she might have come down with something being here on her own with Remi and listening to her wisdom.

ReplyDeleteEmily pregnant with Axton's baby?! And Remi's the one ringing up the pregnancy test?! Oh my! I must say, that's a very creative way to bring Emily back into Yuki's orbit. And it's nice that Remi can undo some of the wrongs she did unto Yuki by helping her get her dream girl. I love this part:

It's even more interesting when we learn that that grandmother wanted Emily to be with a guy. So it's a nice twist that she sees her grandmother through the lens of Remi. It's like her grandmother is giving Emily and Yuki her blessing. ππΆπππΆπ
