"Would it be best if we all went together?" For some reason, Harley felt she needed to protect Maddie somehow.
"But why?" Brick wanted to know. "It's not like they'll be alone. He's not-" He never finished that sentence about Rafe. "He wouldn't."
Well, Harley needed to find out Rafe's state of mind. After all, he'd been with Kimmy and she might as well have been on an old episode of the British teen show, SKINS. Anything could happen. Harley didn't really want to make a big deal about it. There was Cade and Mercer. Surely, Cade would secure the evening. He was the cautious one, but get him with Mercer and well... Mercer was a wild card.
"What do you think is going to happen?" Brick wanted to know. There was no KC to worry about. He was Arizona-bound. Naturally, she had not heard a word from him. She knew she wouldn't. Still, he was on her mind sometimes, and this worried her. Why? Was this happening now? She was very much into Brick. It was supposed to be the most perfect Senior year, and there were thoughts of KC. It was a good idea to worry about Maddie, wasn't it?
"We'll meet up at Jade Palace." She had already made the reservation. "And then..the homecoming dance."
"If only we were playing that gig," Brick sighed as if he dreamed of it, but it was after all just a dream.
She wanted to pinch him. Here they were at school yet their minds were a million miles away. Had they grown up at all?
"They only have somebody from the drama club playing the DJ station." She shrugged as if he needed to forget about ever being in a band. It wasn't like he did it all summer like she did. Still, thoughts of KC rummaged through her brain. Harley hoped she wouldn't think of him when Brick kissed her.
Was she the worst girlfriend, ever?
No, she needed to be thinking about Maddie. What if Rafe just decided he'd have his way with her? You know, chalk up one on his headboard, or something.
"It's prom when everyone is having sex," Brick said as he took her hand in the hallway.
"What?" She winced. Was he planning on them taking the plunge at the end of the school year?

ReplyDeleteSo KC's on the way to AZ. Will we see him again? Nice to see the gang here. KC seems to have an affect on a lot of people! Maddie, now Haley. I'm having a hard time getting a read on Rafe. On the one hand, he might be alright after reading what his brother said about him, but then he keeps talking about he's been playing around all summer. I don't want him to take advantage of Madie...

Oh, such homecoming/prom drama! Harley's right: the state of Rafe's mind is indeed a worry. Especially if, as Harley fears, he's just out to "chalk up one on his headboard" with Maddie. Of course, it sounds like that's where Brick's headed too. Not so much the chalking one up part (at least let's hope!), but taking it to the next level with Harley. You write of high school so convincingly; it's like I'm back there -- but am glad I'm not! 😏💔✨👗🥡🥠
