How you doing?

"I just want you to get it right this time," Cade stopped Rafe before he got out the door to school.

"I'm not getting anything," Rafe was in the center of his discontent of autumn.

"You know, what I mean..you and Maddie." Cade didn't really know her, but it wasn't like Rafe gave him a chance either.

"Yeah, exactly." Rafe's eyes lit. "I'll just have to..you know, savor what summer gave me."

"Are you serious?" Cade stared his twin brother down as if he really hadn't a clue.

Rafe only sighed as if he didn't need a pep talk. It was as if he was doing his meanest to keep her away from him. Cade remembered how Rafe was with Lily, always a bit sinister.

"You are your own worst enemy," Cade said to him on the way to the car that of course, Cade was driving because their folks didn't trust Rafe. It was as if they knew he might be a street racer if given a chance.

"She doesn't like me," Rafe shook his head, no. "I think she's had a long-time crush on KC and he never gave her the time of day, so you know."

"Did you ask her?" Cade wanted to know.

"Why should I?" Rafe looked at him that this wasn't a CW show. "I am only doing what Chili asked of me, and by the end of the month the gig is up."

"What does that mean?" Cade winced. Really, it was the best time of year. It was starting to cool into fall yet summer was hanging on and the nights were getting longer. He said no more. Maybe it was safer this way. Still, he wished Rafe could learn to talk to girls.

Rafe had the window down and was basically a puppy taking in the crisp morning. "I just want ..what I feel for Chili. OK? And if it's an unrequited thing..then..then so be it."

Cade kept driving. Still, he wondered if they would be having conversations like this when they were thirty-five.  He was certain someday mental health would say what was wrong with him, but it would be too late by then.

  4. "savor what summer gave me" oh my :):) But oh he's got a thing for Chili. Why do I think she's out of his league? That's probably not nice of me to think that. :) I don't know, just my vibe... but it sounds like maybe he IS interested in Madie. A little? But doesn't think he has a shot?

  7. Ah, two twins talking about love! Rafe does seem troubled when it comes to matters of the heart. I love the line about Cade treating Rafe like he's on a CW show. And yet, Rafe really is like a character on one of those teen dramas! Especially the part about him being charmed by Chili . . .

    The last paragraph is killer:

"Cade kept driving. Still, he wondered if they would be having conversations like this when they were thirty-five. He was certain someday mental health would say what was wrong with him, but it would be too late by then."

    Hey, it's never too late!

That's crazy about those pre-middle schoolers at your library! You know it's bad when it's a teen that's the voice of reason. I hope they don't come back.

And that's awful about your co-worker coming back from his honeymoon sick. Any more, getting on a plane is like taking your life in your hands for reasons that have nothing to do with air safety (even though it wasn't COVID). I hope he and his wife feel better. And that you stay safe and healthy!
