Listen to the words that you say

"We came in third," Harley sounded happy about it. Of course, Brick couldn't believe it happened.  He had shocked himself that night. Yes, he was a grinning fool he guessed. Yet it had come together so well even on that old stage at the Sokal.

"We did sound good." What more could he want? He didn't think he outshined anyone.

But KC was upset in spite of having Maddie help out on the keyboard at the last minute.

"Maybe he's just sad, that..that it's over," Brick said now as he and Harley were back at his place. Really, it had been a blast, being on stage with all of them. He felt they could make a go of a band if they only tried.

But KC wasn't going to have a band anymore. They were left on their own now. And he didn't see Rafe and Maddie wanting to start up anything. After all, Rafe treated her more like a little sister than anything else. Brick didn't even know if they actually talked.

They hardly acted as if they knew each other. Although, he saw them around. They'd even been to a football game together, but he knew it wasn't a romantic thing.

"Yeah, you're probably right," Harley sighed about the matter, but he could see she did miss KC and it didn't hurt Brick's feelings.

"Maybe..maybe he's where he wants to be now," Brick knew where KC wanted to go to school would be hard work, and even if he did make the grade it didn't mean record companies would be looking to hire him.

Of course, he wouldn't say this to Harley because he knew she didn't want any bad days, but even she was thinking of being a para-professional while going to college after her senior year.

"I don't know, you should just enjoy the semester," He frowned at it, thinking of her future. After all, she was only going to go to Metro and stay home. She was already assigned to go to a nearby elementary to help in the afternoons at an after-school program for daycare. She could get college credit and part-time.

"Stop making me feel so weak," she gave him a perturbed look as she put her arm around him.

"I'm just worried about you, that's all," he was sad they wouldn't be spending every afternoon together. Of course, he was still at the grocery store even if he did get to go to basketball camp this summer.

"It's not like I'm all alone, you know." She said everyone knew about her Type 1 diabetes. "Summer is over and I'm back on my diet."

Brick gave her the eye that she was never honest with him, but she only chuckled. She mentioned then how she would love to be behind the scenes of something big, like a concert or just some singer's assistant. "I know that's not gonna happen. I need to be here for those I can help."

He held her hand. Yes, sometimes being a superstar wasn't being on a stage for everyone to see, but being there for others making the good days better wherever you were.

  1. Aw brick is loving it and the rest of them are not feeling the groove I guess. But summer's over and everyone's moving on. They have the memories of playing together to warm them on a cool winter night (or Brick does anyway lol).

    Love the last line.

  3. Ah, some growing pains for Lily and Brick. But they seem to be making them stronger. I'm so glad that KC never drove a wedge between them. And I understand how Harley may be put off by Brick fretting over her too much. Her realization that's she's needed at places more important than the stage is a very mature one. I love you how you wrap it up:

  7. Oh I do wish KC would start up the band again. That would be interesting, and so many juicy stories to pursue, but I'm sure there will always be drama knowing you:) And love that last paragraph btw!
