It was close. So very close. Junie was certain Eli was at fault when he and Darry showed up at the Sock Hop.
They went unnoticed for a little while, but then Eli had to get greedy at the party table and took more cookies than he was supposed to.
"I was hungry," Eli had said later. "I didn't have lunch."
Shaggy fool, she thought now (OK it was later in the week after Valentine's Day). "Maybe, you shouldn't hang out with Eli," she told Darry at the Youth Center where they were waiting to eat pizza.
"What?" He drew a frown. "No way." He hugged himself as if Eli was his best bud. "Besides, he's seeing your bestie."
"He's," Junnie shook her head. "He's a daredevil."
"Oh, is he?" He gave her the eye then. "So are you." He expressed that she liked to give him too many love marks on his neck.
Junie looked around hoping no one could hear him. Besides, it was noisy in the pool hall and many were playing games at the old pinball machines.
"You know you like it," she reminded him.
"We're tight now," he said about Eli. "I-I need someone to talk to about you."
"What!" She snapped, ready to kick him in the shin. "You don't need to talk to anyone about me."
Junie didn't mean to quarrel, but she couldn't stand the thought of Darry talking to somebody like Eli about her.
"Well, it's not like that." He wrinkled a grimace. "It's a bro thing, OK?"
She sighed. The pizza was ready at the counter. Maybe they would feel better after they ate. And they did. Yes, they were back to being cozy. Laughing, holding each other in the masses. Yes, she loved having a boyfriend.
At the pizza counter, they almost quarreled. After eating pizza, Junie and her boyfriend Darry, felt cozy and loving, as they should be. Nice. Eating can have a good effect on relationship.

DeletePizza makes everyone happy
ReplyDeleteWell, that's an interesting situation...
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely chapter! Having a boyfriend is fantastic as long as you love it. When a relationship is happy, it is a great addition to one's life. Unfortunately, many people are not in happy relationships.
ReplyDeleteHow truth. Perhaps youth is on their side. And hopefully, Junie won't think long and hard on this. But someday...there is a chance it won't always be hunky dory as they say! Thanks for your comment!
Deleteson una linda pareja. Genial fragmento. Te mando un beso.

ReplyDeleteI liked the chapter and I was craving pizza, greetings
ReplyDeleteHmm, a little bit of tension between Darry and Junie, but all's well that ends well! I can see both their sides, Darry wanting a guy friend to confide in and Junie not wanting to be discussed, even with the best of intentions. As always, the last lines are so good:
