I guess that's why they call it the blues

Well, of course, Rafe wasn't going to stay home. But he didn't move in with Ruby and her family either.

Maybe he was over there quite a bit. It was amazing he got that last term paper done. It did help that Ruby wrote it for him.

Somehow, he could do NO wrong at her father's house. It helped that his dad was Ruby's father's friend and that kind of rekindled a sweet friendship.

Still, Rafe had found himself a little space above the bakery even if it was temporary. "I lived there when I first moved here." Ste had said. It was tiny, but enough for him. And it was free. At least at the moment.

Between building a retaining wall for Ruby's dad and learning to drive the new bakery delivery truck, things were looking up. Even he was surprised. Maybe he'd get on at UPS yet. Well, he could dream.

Then prom arrived and guess who he went with? He could tell he'd hit a nerve with Harley. Naturally, Ruby wasn't speaking to her. Of course, Ruby bought him dinner and rented his tux too. He even saw Maddie that night with Rainy. At least, they were civil to each other. Oh, he was keeping calm. He knew it would have to be this way. No way was he going to get anyone mad.

And he was happy Ruby hadn't had a row with Harley nor spilled the secret she knew about KC.

Later, he texted Maddie. He wanted to say something nice, but he couldn't. He blamed it on his phone.

"Are you really happy?" But she didn't respond.

Like a small stone of ice lodged in his heart, he still felt something for her. Even if he didn't want to. He knew his real friend was Ruby and maybe that was all they'd ever be. But she seemed wise about things he wasn't so sure about. Especially, with high school graduation approaching.

Yes, they'd danced with the best of them. Still, he wondered what Ruby would have done if KC had shown up. He did go back to Phoenix to finish his semester.

Oh, he was certain that trip to Arizona to see Ruby had made him feel so old. It felt like freedom too. He couldn't go back to being that kid he was. He needed a real job. Not college.

  4. Hello!
I hope he gets the job at UPS, but if he finishes his studies he's more likely to get a better job! I think the most important thing is to have a job that you enjoy doing, even if it's delivering pizzas!!!
    Have a great weekend!

  15. It's always entertaining -- and a little bit sad -- to read about Rafe. I'm not surprised that he hasn't forgotten Maddie. This part is beautiful:

"Like a small stone of ice lodged in his heart, he still felt something for her."

You have a real talent for showing us what's inside the human heart. 💖📓💖📓💖📓
