"I think you should just do it," Maddie said about Boone's biological mom's situation.
"Like what?" He squinted. She knew it pained him to even talk about her. After, she hadn't responded before when he first reached out to her while trying to find her.
"It's different now," Maddie remained positive as she busied herself in the kitchen while he looked at the new phone number Alfie sent him.
"She..she didn't even ask about me," Boone looked so sad as his nose stuffed up. She knew he didn't like this uncertainty.
She got the dishes put away while he kept staring at his cell. "Look, it doesn't matter if we hear from her. You just have to show her you are happy. We're happy. We'll send her a video.
The way his eyes peered at her, it felt as if she was asking for a lot.
"It doesn't have to be Academy Award-winning, you know," Maddie took the phone from him.
"Maybe.." Boone shrugged as if he wanted to be left out of it all together. He could just send his mom a picture of her.
"Oh, come on," she laughed. "We need her to know us."
Boone gritted a grin as if she was asking him to put on an act.
"We, jut have to be ourselves," she said.
"What do we say?" He was so serious.
"Something unscripted,"
Again, Boone didn't like it.
"OK, smile and introduce me," Maddie said she would do the rest. Boone nodded. Of course, they had to take a few deep breaths together. Maddie was afraid Boone might need a nap on the couch too, but this was his way to get comfortable.
"Oh, we are not going to lounge on the couch," she said.
"Why can't we. We need to show her we are together," Boone decided.
"But I want us to be in our favorite room in the apartment," Maddie tilted her head.
"In the bedroom," Boone teased with a tooth grin.
"The kitchen," she looked at him brightly.
Boone sighed as if he'd be serious. So they edged next to the new kettle in their very humble abode. and Maddie got them phone into the picture of the phone and started recording.
"Hi, Mom," Boone suddenly paused as if he couldn't, but Maddie squeezed him closer to her with her other arm around him. They were both in their comfy hoodie and sweatpants. "It's me, your soon Boone. I've got someone here for you to meet, my fiancee."
"Hi, I'm Maddie."
Maddie did her best not to fake a smile. "I work at the library and Boone works at the bakery. We're both taking online classes, and well, we don't want to have a long engagement. We plan to get married in May. We'd love to see you."
Both felt as if they might lose consciousness when Maddie stopped recording.
"I don't want to ever do that again," Boone went to make coffee and got out the last of the brownies.
"Oh, but we need to send one to my Mom and Dad," Maddie smiled. Sure it felt like ripping off a bandaid. She wondered if it would be best just to facetime them on FACEBOOK.
