It's not as weird as you think it is

"I feel like... he was in Zoey's stomach when he was well over a month old," Alfie couldn't help but confess that he thought Lucas might be Superman. The baby looked to be a year old at six months. His weight was like lead, but Alfie held on to him as if he could take the pressure.

Lucas kicked and wanted down, but Alfie managed to hold him as he sat up, weighing heavily on Alfie's lap, and Lucas looked Alfie in the eye. He seemed content to watch Alfie, but Alfie thought it was time for him to go in, away from the outdoor grilling.

When he got back, Gage just laughed and got another light beer. "I never got a chance to think things through like you with my first one." Gage reminded him that he didn't get to see Alec until he was several months old, and he'd had to go all the way to England to see him. It was a time full of awkwardness, but somehow, he'd managed to bring Halie and the baby back home with him. "I wish I could have thoughts like you are having. And then..well, you know..Nora was the best. I'm so glad we have Ava. It was great to be there the moment she arrived. But I never worried if Ava came too late, and you shouldn't worry about Lucas, either. He's growing, and the doctor OKed it for him to start food."

Alfie sighed. "Yeah, I know, I'm overthinking it." He might be on anxiety meds before it was all over, but he wanted to be clear-headed and always on call for Daddy duty. He did like staying home with him. He had a ton of videos of the baby working on his crawling technique. "I  showed you how he got to the remote, didn't I?" Alfie smiled as if it was the best video ever.

"Yeah, and you sent it to me too," Gage chucked as he took a sip of beer. "Are you sure that's all it is?"

"What do you mean?" Alfie looked at him blankly.

"Your Mom?" Gage looked at him as if he could fill in the blank. Gage turned the meat.

"My mom?" Alfie glared at him.

"Well, she does have a boyfriend now."

"He's not her boyfriend," he didn't mean to sound that she couldn't have one, but he just considered Joe her roommate. "They're only doing that so Boone and Mattie can be close to her."

"Oh, come on," Gage laughed at him then. "You really believe that?"

Alfie decided to be close-lipped. There was nothing else he could say. It was just going to take some getting used to. But he didn't want to talk about it.

Besides, it was the last grill of the summer. Alfie and Zoey were over with the baby. They all could have gone to Carson's but Alfie knew Gage just wanted to relax in the quiet. After all, Alec was spending the night with his cousins. It was just Lucas and Ava. And they were practically the same size. Lucas had already started to notice her. He was a go-getter. Alfie knew Lucas took him, after all.
