we can work it out

Lux was a little frustrated with getting ready for another semester at the University. There was also the Wade factor that was baffling. She did wonder what her brother was up to these days. There was a lot to worry about, but she couldn't help but think about Evan.

"Did you and your boyfriend break up?" Lux saw Sawyer out with some girl. Actually, she'd waited on him with his date at the diner. He wasn't a real big spender. After all, they went dutch.

"We didn't actually makeup." Evan told her over supper. He'd made soup and sandwiches. Lately, they ate together at his place.

"Oh," Lux decided there was a lot she didn't know. "Maybe, you're still friends."

"I guess so." He didn't sound all that confident about it. "I didn't want to be in a relationship."

Lux nodded as if she understood. They went ahead and ate and she fed Jake some of the sandwich.

"I'm not really good, you know, with stuff like Sawyer," Evan finally said while cleaning up after supper. "I don't mean to sound harsh-"

"Oh, I don't think so." She told him Sawyer wasn't his type, anyway. "He'd probably just mooch off you. Does he even have a job?"

Evan kept straight lipped as if he didn't want to hear bad things about Sawyer. But Evan finally admitted Sawyer wasn't working.

"How does he get off, not working?" Lux winced, thinking she didn't like people like Sawyer. "You'll meet someone much better."

Evan shook his head, no. "I'm not going to meet anybody." He shrugged, but he looked a little teary-eyed about it.

"How come?" She asked a while later after the dishes were done and she changed Jake's pamper.

"I dunno. I don't mean to be selfish about it, but really, its best I don't get involved with anyone." He told her while he busied himself in the livingroom with some yarn he was crocheting for his old couch.

"But, you're so great." She smiled. He almost smiled, but shook his head, no.

"My sister has a mental illness. My mother had it too. And well, it might happen to me." He could barely speak of the harsh reality he was waiting for.

Lux didn't know what to say, but she thought of her own mother with her bipolar disorder. For years, she was sure her brother would follow her mother's footsteps. Of course, Jake's father was suicidal, did that count as a mental illness? The past was not going to stop Lux from enjoying the future.

"You never know, you might change your mind when you really fall in love with someone," Lux shrugged. She handed the baby over to him. "See, I trust you."
