We got married
Sheena should have expected as much. She knew all along Omaha didn't want to go anywhere to get married. He was not a guy who would do a destination wedding. No way could she ever get him to the church on time. And it didn't take much to get the neighbor, Betty from down the street to officiate the wedding. After all, that wedding license they had wasn't going to be around forever, was it?
Naturally, Omaha stayed up all night smoking brisket and ribs. While she tried to make it as much a summer wedding as she could. They got married on the front porch and had the reception in potluck style in the backyard.
In all, Sheena didn't think it was as much a headache as she thought it would be. Especially, with a little help from friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Still, Betty's words stayed with her about what she said about marriage. "You know, the longer you keep putting it off, the chances are the marriage won't last long, once it does happen."
She hoped she and Omaha would not be that statistic. All her friends were married now. She hoped they didn't think she and Omaha were the most selfish people in the world.
"How could you ever think that?" Minnie one of her closest friends asked. Of course, Minnie was married with children and still at home with her girls while her husband was still taking classes and working nights as an orderly at the emergency room.
Sheena wished she could be as giving as her friend, and maybe she was after all.
It was a quaint celebration, full of laughter and fun.
