how will you know

"Oh, she's not as strong as you are, Babe?" This much Jay knew when he called Brian's sister Janine on his smartphone. He would stay the night, but he couldn't sleep unless he heard Janine's voice. After all, he wouldn't have come to see her brother unless she asked him too.

"Is he OK?" Naturally, she was worried. He heard the baby crying in the background, but Jay knew she would settle the baby down. He loved the way she handled the baby and if it wasn't for her, he might not be the father that he was. He wished he was right next to Janine helping with the baby.

"Hard to say," Jay told her Brian didn't talk much. Jay wasn't quite sure what Brian was feeling, but at least Brian and Ivy were together. "I mean, she's really young. He never really was around you or your mom, all that much. It's something new, he'll get used to it, having a family."

Jay wasn't sure what he could say to his old friend Brian. Was he disgusted with him now that he was with Janine?

He asked Brian this as soon as he got off the phone with Janine.

"You don't hate me, do you?" Jay asked. Brian only shrugged but admitted he didn't know anything anymore.

"Things, things are kind of in limbo, you know," Brian said he loved Ivy, but he wasn't really sure Ivy loved him. "What if she never did?"

Jay was closed lipped. He didn't know what to tell him. "If it doesn't work out, you can always come back home."

Brian looked at him as if that would be the worst idea, ever.

"Don't think of the past, just keep looking to the future. You'll be OK." Jay gave him a pat on the back. Still, some people were more complicated than others. Someone like Ivy might never see how good her life was until it was too late.
