"What? We won't be here for Easter?" Brick couldn't help but scowl just a little. Didn't his mother know Lily's birthday was around Easter? "Why would we go to Aunt Brit's?" He was in a stomp.
"They have a new house," his mother told him. Aunt Brit and her family lived all the way out in Kearney. It would take hours to get there.
"So." Brick swelled a frown and hugged himself hard. He wasn't going. He needed to be here for Lily's birthday and Easter too. Besides, they weren't all that religious. As he recalled, they always had an Easter egg hunt and cookout at Grand Betty's a.k.a his grandmother's house.
"You need to see your cousins," his mom went on and on about the importance of family.
Brick practically rolled his eyes at that. Didn't she know how important Lily was to him? She was his best friend. And best friends meant nurturing their friendship. He knew what this really meant. He'd have to take care of baby Elisabeth in the backseat.
A bit of him wanted to worry her about car trouble or an accident. But he knew that would trouble her and she was practically in a fragile state with this new pregnancy of hers.
"Won't you get tired in the car that long?" He was really thinking this out for his mom.
His mom sighed. It seemed she felt she owed this to her sister. She wanted to be a better sister.
"It'll only be for the weekend." His mom tilted her head and gave him the serious eye. "Besides, you'll be texting Lily nonstop."
Brick tensed a slight grin. His mom really did know him.
