it's bound to take some time
Betty was pretty sure Gordy could be anything he wanted to be. Sometimes, she saw that boy he still was with expressions of joy and happiness.
But now he was a father and a working one at that.
"Aren't things tough for you?" Betty asked as he was tending to a poppy baby. She brought him handy wipes, but he was already using a handful.
"Of course not." He wasn't exactly smiling trying to dispose of a dirty diaper and getting another one on while she was kicking at him.
Betty never had that kind of man around when her kids were little. Of course, she wished her daughter could be more grateful to have a husband like Gordy, but she was off at yoga.
"I know you think we've let you down," Gordy looked back at her. "With another one on the way." He picked up the baby. It was easy to see she was Daddy's girl and she would be the only fan club he would ever need.
"Well, if you'd tried for one...it might not have happened." Betty shrugged. Perhaps her smile was waning. Why hadn't she enjoyed motherhood more than she did? She was always trying to get by when she was her daughter's age. And her little family kept growing. It was true. She was probably not the best mother in the world. Yes, she could get by with a six pack of beer a night, back then.
She'd never considered herself an alcoholic. But maybe she yelled more than she should have. She'd blamed her problems on anyone but herself. Yet, she'd gotten through it.
Gordy went to get the sack of goodies Tiffany brought her. She was into essential oils now. Even a sales rep.
"She gets a lot of freebies. She thought you might find some use for them," Gordy told her while she went through the amber bottles.
Betty just smiled. "I wouldn't even know what to do with them." She looked at him.
"Put'm on the bottom of your feet." He showed her the little recipe book at the bottom of the gift bag. "Tiffany seems to think they help her sleep and leave her in a better mood." He also told her they used them for massages.
"Sounds so romantic." Betty caught a laugh in her throat.
"Usually, I'm in charge of that." His smile was quick.
Betty shook her head. She guessed Tiffany had trained him pretty well, after all.
