"Oh, he's my everything," Janine blurted before she knew it. After all, it was like a well-practiced script. Honestly, Jay didn't want her to talk at all.
Janine nursed her bottom lip and watched the baby sleeping in her arms. This was what was keeping her here. This was what kept her going. But she could see her brother's woman Ivy looked at her as if she was just a stupid girl.
Perhaps, she was. Falling into something with Jay. Of course, he thought he was her savior of some kind. Did she really think she could depend on the teen that got her in this predicament?
"He's barely a sophomore in high school," remembering Jay's words about Shiloh still made her cringe. But he was probably just as stupid as she was, or so she'd been told by her keeper a thousand or so times.
It was amazing she'd gotten this far. Jay wasn't always a nice guy. Sure he made it look he was the king of romance. But she knew his threats. She knew he thought he was doing too much for her.
The things he did for his best friend, who just so happened to be Brian.
A lump of despair lodged in Janine's throat. She didn't want to be locked up in a storage unit, again. She didn't want to be shoved against a wall with a fist waiting to punch her stomach. But it was always a rollercoaster ride with Jay.
Her mother couldn't pick up on any of Jay's bad traits. After all, she'd never been with any good men. Her mother had her own worries with her gambling debts.
Janine did her best to smile now. There was nothing to look forward too. Jay could take her out anytime he wanted. And it had nothing to do with dating.
