the here and now
"What are you doing?" Sunny practically snapped, wondering what they were doing here in this old basement that his brother was making his home. "You don't have to do this." Sunny's face tensed while Sunny tinkered with the water heater.
Sunny sniffed around as if he was sensing danger, but maybe it was just mold.
"You're gonna get sick." How many times did he need to tell Sid to come home with him? Why did he have to be so stubborn?
"I highly doubt that." Sid turned back to him with an impish grin.
"I thought you were seeing that Kylie. Maybe you could move in with her." Sunny shrugged trying to be carefree when really all he wanted was for him and his brother to be a real family again.
"That's over," Sid said rather quietly as he picked up another tool from the bag or wrenches on the cold cement.
"When did that happen?" Sunny squinted, remembering they'd had a nice Valentines day together. They'd gone to dinner and a movie.
"I dunno." He seemed indifferent, but not quite broken-hearted. "It's not a big deal."
"Is she seeing someone?"
"Uh-huh."
"And you didn't do a thing about it?" Sunny shot him a look thinking he had to be in love with her as he was in love with Rosie.
Sid shook his head, no. "She was seeing that guy all along. I mean, I never told her not to see anyone." Sid shrugged. "Besides, I kind of like that guy."
Sunny squinted. How could they be so different? Not that they were twins. Only a year apart.
"Look, I never dated before. I never have had time, you know." Sid was even lipped. "But you and Ollie kept insisting that I needed too, before it was too late." He was quiet then. "Maybe it is too late. You know, my heart didn't skip a beat or anything when I saw her or talked to her. She was nice, but maybe I don't have that romantic gene like you do."
Sid looked him over as Sunny was perfect and he evidently had something wrong with him.
"I just..I just want you to enjoy life," Sunny told him. "I know, I've been so lucky." He hadn't raised in the foster system like his brother.
"It's OK." Sid almost smiled. "I'm glad you're around. It's just, I'm grown up. You're grown up. I can't go back."
He made it sound as if he was an old dog that couldn't learn any new tricks. Evidently, being here right now was all one could ask for.
