if that's not enough
"What? You really have a date for homecoming?" Honestly, Sunny didn't think it would happen, but when he heard the news from Rosie over the phone, it made him physically ill.
He hated this. Why did he want to be here in Chicago?
True, the internship was great. Especially, to get it right out of high school. Yet, it was practically an apprenticeship. He was learning on the job instead of being faced with lots of academics he didn't really need for building buildings. At the moment he was in his dormroom studying the basics of his future. And it was raining.
"Well..you said you wanted me to go," Her voice made it sound as if he was the one at fault. Not her.
"Oh..of course." He needed to have faith in Rosie. He could hear his Dad telling him this in his conscience, but it was so hard to let go. "I..I just thought you were going with Robby and Val," Sunny said as he pressed his lips tight, thinking he wished he could be there.
"I am," she assured him. "Robby knows him." She knew her date's name was Chance and Robby knew him from his neighborhood.
Immediately, Sunny thought of hoodlums out late at night, spray painting abandoned walls and on the run.
"Great," Sunny did his best to sound enthusiastic. Yet, he felt this was a big mistake. Although, this was Rosie's senior year. She needed to make good memories. He knew there was so many things she couldn't change about her family situation. Sunny asked about the dress then and about their other friends at school. He needed to be the listeners she was so fond of.
