once upon a time
There was a moment when Ivy thought her whole world was gone. She couldn't believe her baby boy was not there. She was overwhelmed with tears and agonizing what to do. Even Jay was baffled.
They needed to call the police. It felt like a step in the right direction, but before they could even discuss it with her mom it was not what Ivy expected.
"OUT! I want you out!" Her mother had no time to listen to her about Keanu. She said she knew everything going on.
Brian called her. He did have the baby.
Ivy looked at Jay blankly as they found themselves in the freezing cold. Ivy was only in her pink crocks and winter coat.
The front door was locked and Ivy didn't have a key to get in. She barely managed to get out of there with her purse and scarf. She had no money. Just a driver's license but no car to drive.
They got into Jay's old truck and he let it warm up. All the while he was scratching off the ice on the windshield with a gift card. He didn't look quite as manly as he did a few hours ago when they were in her inviting bed.
The truck couldn't heat up fast enough. Ivy shivered, remembering her mother's words, "Now you've made your bed, sleep in it!"
Ivy imagined Brian seeing the two of them together. Why hadn't he woken them? What was he doing? How could he?
She tried to breathe but all she could take in was the gas and the exhaust. She felt so sad. So miserable.
Her mother would have nothing to do with either of them. It was as if she hoped they froze to death in this wintery mix that was about.
Finally, Jay got in and put his arm around Ivy. He promised, "It'll be OK. We'll get through this somehow."
But it felt so strange and not at all what Ivy was expecting. Of course, she hadn't thought that far ahead with Jay. She needed a quick fix and he'd been the guy she just wanted to spend some time with. Her life was so boring. Until now. Now it was like entering a whole new universe. All she had was Jay to depend on.
