Love in the time of the pandemic
It was getting weird. Valentina felt as if she was in an emotional tailspin with this pandemic. In all her life, she never thought she would ever say that word.
Of course, Ste and Amira made the best of it these days. She helped with curb sided deliveries, first with customers, later for first responders and then anyone else who might need a sandwich. It was good to keep busy and Robby was by her side. It was all good. He was even staying at her house while his Dad was on a business trip.
And then things took a turn for the worse when his dad got home. He was sick and her mother thought it best if she went to see to him. It was probably just the flu or bronchitis. They were still waiting to find out. Her mom called to say it might be just pneumonia.
She felt a little shakey now, on her own with Robby, who didn't seem the least rattled by the situation. He was glad to help at the bakery, and there were plenty of hoops to shoot on Valentina's vacant driveway.
She found herself restless, staying up most of the night making granny squares in bed.
"Damn, girl, just how many granny squares can you make?" Robby informed her he wasn't going to sit around making cabins out toothpicks.
She looked at him kind of funny. Sure they cooked together, studied together, watched TV together.
What was he getting at?
"You're my girlfriend and..." He shrugged as if they should be doing what couples do.
"What about your dad?" She winced. "Aren't you worried."
That's when he stood in the middle of the livingroom to make his great speech about how scared he was. "What if we all die during this ordeal? Shouldn't we making the best of it?" He told her he was uncertain about so many things. Couldn't she be on his side just once?
