the Distance between Us

Was it April Fools Day? It didn't quite feel like it this year to Ollie. It might as well have been Ground Hog Day, to him. It felt like the same day to him, tuning in to classes and checking social media, dreading to hear of more outbreaks. It was mindblowing and mentally numbing at the same time. He hated to hear the loss, which made his throat all the more scratchy.

And then his parents call.

1. Was he taking his temperature?
2. Was he being safe?

Just what was he and Maddie up too? His mom made it sound as if she was no better than a party girl on the brink of leading him down the wrong path.

"She's working," he informed her that Maddie was getting paid fulltime while working parttime as a preschool teacher these days. He didn't understand why they didn't like her. After all, breaking up with his high school girlfriend was all his fault, not Maddie's.

Of course, his mother did ask if he'd heard from Valentina. She was worried about her.

"I'm sure she's at home." Ollie reminded her that Valentina was still in high school and still lived at home. He didn't have any business wondering what she was up too and neither did his mother.

"I'm in love with Maddie," He couldn't believe he even said it, but it was true. She was the one who'd changed everything for him. He felt like a grownup now, not a screwup. "Just give her some credit, will you?"

A part of him believed in his heart Maddie must be the mother he'd never had, but better. And he'd manned up, without even doubting himself. He wanted a future with her. It was so simple, couldn't anyone understand this?
