it's always been this way
"Why didn't you tell me, Candy left you?" Truthfully, Xander didn't know where to begin, but he didn't want to leave his little brother alone. Maybe his friend Steve was right about Simon's suicidal tendencies.
He brought food to make for him. It was just, he couldn't leave him. Not right now.
"It's no big deal," Simon faked a smile and said he was OK. "I guess the place was just too much for Steve, but he helped clean up."
Xander nodded and went to put the fresh produce in the fridge.
"But, you could have told me. Did you have a fight? Do..do you think..maybe...you two will make up?" Xander knew Candy wasn't perfect, but he'd been glad someone was in Simon's life. At least it was one step normal for Simon who was missing parents from his life. "I'm sorry I haven't called, but.."
"It's OK," Simon was pleasant enough. "I'm fine."
"Are you?" Xander didn't think so. He didn't even know if Simon was taking his medications. He hadn't seen any in the medicine cabinet in the bathroom nor even in the kitchen. "Are you even sleeping?"
"Of course," Simon chuckled.
Xander wasn't sure that was a good sign. "Aren't you supposed to be taking...anti-"
"Why? Why should I? I don't need them," Simon's jaw clenched. "It messes up..it messes up my sex life."
"What?" Xander winced.
"I don't want to be dopey," Simon put his index finger to the corner of his eye. "I can't think on that stuff. I walk around like a zombie."
"Why didn't you say something before?" Xander had no idea that Simon wasn't taking his medications.
Simon sighed and turned from Xander as if the conversation was finished.
"You really need a check up," Xander told him.
"But how?" Simon reminded him how hard it was to check in with mental health these days. Even then he'd have to make an appointment with some counselor on ZOOM. "I am fine. I've always been fine."
Xander gritted a smile. He knew he should stay the night.
