a harden heart
When Brian got the call, he seriously didn't want to answer but Bom told him too. And it was a good thing he did, or they might not be on their way to Rapid City.
It was as if Bom expected it. She had everything loaded up in the car in a matter of minutes. She called Ivy's mother, but she didn't want to come. She thought it was best to wait.
"Why are mother's like that?" Bom decided to dry and let Brian tend to Keanu.
"Well, why would Ivy ever leave Keanu in the first place," Brian was his sullen self. He didn't even know why he was going, but Ivy wanted Bom to come with Keanu (Brian and Ivy's toddler son).
Bom didn't respond. She was cool as a cucumber.
"You know, we're never getting back together," Brian spouted, but then felt he was singing some dumb Taylor Swift song, "I mean..Ivy and me."
"Yes, I know." Silence was all Bom gave him.
Brian sighed. "I love you know, it's..it's a different kind of love than..than with Ivy."
Bom nodded. After all, she was older and wiser.
"Who would have thought..we..we could be together after you know breakups and all." He knew he wasn't saying anything right.
"It's OK. It'll be OK," Bom told him. "Ivy's not thinking about you. She's not thinking about me. She doesn't have to think about us. We have to let her see Keanu. She misses him. He misses her."
A lump of regret lodged in Brian's throat. He wanted to be grownup, but he hated sharing his son with someone who might as well pulled his heart out and stomped on it. He still hated Ivy. He couldn't help it.
"Just be thankful, she's OK," Bom said watching the road.
Brian nodded. He knew he'd do anything she asked him too.
