what you can find at the library

"Invite her out with us," Alfie whispered. He'd waited all week for this. God forbid if he told Steve that he'd never gone out with a girl with pink hair. "I need this."

They were in the stacks of the science fiction section of the library. Steve was on his way to show Alfie where the adult graphic novels were.

"But, I was going to ask Melissa out," Steve looked back at him a little hurt that his friend had jumped in before him.

"You can't, she's a co-worker. You know, you shouldn't have work-related romances," Alfie assured him it would be wrong.

"She's only an intern," Steve practically looked at him sideways as Alfie was acting as if he'd found something good to read.

"You would have done it already, and besides you won't. It takes you forever to do anything when it comes to asking somebody out." Alfie could hardly keep his voice at a whisper.

Steve winced.

"Besides, you've got Simon," Alfie told him that was a meal ticket in its self.

Of course, Steve was in a pout, but that didn't stop Alfie from smiling. Melissa was right behind him. Out of nowhere, she appeared.

"Whatcha, doing?" She smiled back at him as she mentioned to Steve that some guy was looking for him.

Alfie smirked at Steve who remained even lipped and headed back to the counter.

"You're Steve's friend? Right?"

"Yes, old roommate, first semester," Alfie nodded watching Melissa in her pink glasses with those lush lips. She definitely gave nerdy an entirely different meaning. She introduced herself and said she hoped to be a librarian at the University. She really wasn't fond of public libraries. But Steve was a good guy. She'd enjoyed working with him because he knew how to run anything that needed fixing, especially printers and copiers.

Alfie gritted a smile hoping Melissa didn't have a crush on him. He asked questions where she'd gone to school and which university she was graduating from. Hopefully, this was heading in the right direction.
