"Whatever you do, don't look back," Bom said to Ivy as they were getting dinner ready.
She'd had a troubling dream last night, that Jay didn't come back. It awoke Bom in the middle of the night and she was worried bad news was coming, but she didn't mention this to Ivy. Because she knew Jay was important, and she was glad Ivy was staying positive.
Of course, she wouldn't dare mention any of this to Brian. It was still a wonder they were even together.
It was a different kind of love than she'd had with Cody. Somehow that didn't feel quite as grownup as with Brian. They'd been friends first and it was just a surprise that they were together. Of course, this was something she couldn't even discuss with Ivy. But still, Bom hoped Ivy could find that kind of love with Dan.
She knew he'd be a good father. There was a certain serious about him that was the opposite she knew what Ivy was looking for. But maybe Ivy was the whimsical world that Dan needed. Of course, this was the kind of cultivation that took time and maybe Ivy didn't have that sort of patience, but Bom hoped she did.
"Don't look back, what are you even talking about?" Ivy smiled as she went to check on the casserole in the oven.
"Never mind," Bom wanted to say something wise, but she'd never been anything but smart-mouthed. Bom thought of how her miserable life had been when she thought Joon was the love of her life and she'd followed him to the states from Seoul. That felt a lifetime ago, and she knew she wasn't a good person then.
True, she did think she was destined to love him, and then she met Cody who she thought would solve all her problems. It was best now not to bank on anyone and yet she'd found her own happiness, somehow.
"I hope you'll think about going back to the University," Bom then said.
"Well, not right now," Ivy smiled patting her stomach.
"I know, but some day. I hope you won't give up on your studies." Bom told her.
"What about you?" Ivy wanted to know if she had really thought about getting a degree.
"I'm fine at the moment," she liked her office job and being close to home, and she loved having a family with Brian and Keanu.
"It's just, I don't know how I would feel if Brian was with anyone else," Ivy told her. "I feel Keanu is safe with you. And really," she laughed softly. "I like you so much more than Brian."
Bom couldn't help but smile. "Well, you're a good friend."
"Am I?" Ivy looked surprised. She told Bom she couldn't remember a time when she'd even talked with any of her friends from high school. "I'm the worst."
"Don't say that," Bom understood Ivy completely. She knew she wasn't the best friend either to those she'd gone to high school with, but now friendship felt different. A whole lot easier.
That's good advice, not to look back on things.
ReplyDeleteThere are different kinds of love in life between two people: brotherly love, friendly love, fatherly love. Each has its contribution to our understanding of this great emotional state: Love.
