Dan wasn't sure he could be the support that Ivy needed. After all, he was going through his own mystery. Seriously, he never thought anything would come of it, but it was Micah's way of helping Dan find the truth about his past. After all, Dan helped him get his own place.
Someone did know the whereabouts of his little sister, and she lived here. There was a rush of happiness and sadness washed over him. He wanted to be hopeful, but what if it was too late.
He'd remembered her vaguely as an infant. He'd always thought she would have gone to the orphanage with him, but it hadn't turned out that way. He guessed because she was practically a newborn someone had taken her. It was as if she was just in his imagination now. Over time, he learned not to speak of her because it was useless for him to even question.
He didn't want to get his hopes up. He knew it wasn't even worth mentioning to Ivy.
Yes, he felt bad for her, but not that bad. Maybe it was best that Jay didn't come back. He let her go on about how she was so angry with herself. She didn't even feel like it was the holidays.
"It will be different this year," he admitted as he spoke of COVID and staying home. He guessed she didn't feel like putting a puzzle together. Instead, he put on the electric kettle and hoped she'd calm down with a cup of chamomile tea. "You have to think positive. Don't let him get to you, like this. You have a lot to look forward to."
"Oh yeah, having this baby alone," Ivy pouted, but he brought the hot tea and she danced the teabag around in the cup as if she was bored out of her mind.
"You're not alone," he told her a lot of people cared about her, even Brian and Bom, and what about baby Keanu?
Dan pressed his lips tight and dug into the pocket of his tan trousers. He had his sister's name on a slip of paper. He knew the odds were against him.
"Do you know her?"
Ivy looked the paper over. She winced then looked up at him. "Yeah, we went to high school together."
"High school?" Dan squinted, but his heart almost skipped a beat.
"She's still in high school," Ivy nodded. "I think Valentina still works at the Downtown bakery."
Dan nodded, thinking maybe he'd met her, but he couldn't remember.
"She's awfully young for you to be thinking about dating her," Ivy told him.
Dan supposed he should have explained it better. "She's my sister," he sighed. "I didn't know until a few days ago."
Chamomile tea is always a good idea :)
