Oh, it was wearing thin, or so Poppy imagined her love life with Alfie. On one hand, it was all working out, when she thought about it. They got along. They were really a couple. It was just..somebody wanted sex all the time.
"Can't we do anything else!" She knew she screeched. She hadn't meant to, but have a phone call from the Aunt who raised her and suddenly Poppy got a different perspective. She was not going to bring it up, but she couldn't help it as she was doing the laundry and the dishes. Of course, she should be thinking of the new job she started at the bank. It wasn't full-time yet, but it could be.
"What?" Alfie was a little bug-eyed and of course, he didn't hear her. He came up from behind her and put his arms around her waist. Of course, she sighed and he kissed her swan-like neck in response. She winced. Of course, she liked it, but she knew she shouldn't. She pulled away.
"What's the matter with you?" He wanted to know, he let go and he went to dry some dishes.
"Maybe it's work, you know. I dunno if I really fit in," she festered a frown she didn't mean to make him mad, but maybe he should be. She looked him over. Maybe he needed a haircut. She'd gotten one. She was trying to play the grownup part now.
"What?" He looked at her as if she was the one angry, not him.
"You." She drew a small frown. How could she explain it, "Remember that time, you came home before you even got to work, just to say you forgot something, and..and we had a quickie on the couch."
He shook with laughter as if he thought those were the best of times, not the worst. "What's got into you? Who have you been talking to?" He assured her that she shouldn't let other people plan the rules of their sex life.
"My aunt seems to think you could find a better job," she was even lipped.
"Well, I'm going to be a pharmacist, it takes a long time to be a pharmacist." He told her he was going to actually start his pharmacist classes later this month and it hadn't been easy getting a scholarship or two to do it. As it was, the drugstore he worked at was helping pay some of the tuition.
She looked at him as if he had an excuse for everything. Of course, she knew this was no time to start picking on the guy she'd always wanted, but now it was beginning to feel she was missing something that everyone else had. Maybe it was money or just a different way of living.
"Look, everybody wants what we've got," Alfie smirked.
Still, it barely paid the bills and she knew she wouldn't be getting anything new to wear for another year.
Oh dear, this is a rough patch.

DeleteIt's good where we are not, and the grass at the neighbor's place is always greener ... That's true.
ReplyDeleteHmm. Poppy and Alfie seem to want different things. It's funny how that kind of tension can transform even sex into a battleground: "Of course, she sighed and he kissed her swan-like neck in response. She winced. Of course, she liked it, but she knew she shouldn't. She pulled away." Also, I can sympathize with Poppy being upset about not being able to buy new clothes for a year. I hope her new job becomes full time. On a lighter note, the fried egg-covered fridge in the collage is so cute!
ReplyDeleteIt's certainly hard to find that balance. Sometimes, we are completely oblivious and in complete bliss..but then that one person will come along and see a certain truth, you might have over looked. Or you might wake up one day..hey we might as well have been buried in the sand all this time! Especially, when you might find a friend who has it all..a house, the furniture, real travel. Each of us have our own standards with our relationships and the key is to keeping it solid which takes a lot faith.
DeleteUy pobre los problemas financieros siempre son fuertes. Te mando un beso
ReplyDeleteI think Alfle is a very quick one and this is not good! But Thanks God! Poppy is a sane person. I trust you poppy, yes! You Manage this relationship not Alfle.
ReplyDeleteA very intense chapter.
ReplyDeleteRegards.
Yes, sometimes chemistry cannot solve everything. That is why empathy and communication is so important in relationship. Alfie and Poppy clearly like one another and there is a lot of chemistry but relationship needs more than attraction to lost. Still, I think they can make it. Alfie seems to be trying, with classes and everything.... Poppy must appreciate that he is trying even if he is less mature and adult behaving than she is.
