Nobody had stopped her. Yes, Lexi didn't like to think of herself as unstoppable, but these days she was going as fast as she could with Phil. No way was she waiting for a wedding to happen. She'd learned her lesson during the pandemic, back when she might have been too good for her own good.
Of course, she didn't want to have it out with Oakley, either, but there she was in the breakroom watching her teabag dance in the hot water of her cup.
Lexi knew what she might think. She remembered how Oakley was when Phil got there. Oh, she'd watched him from afar, as if she might get a grip on his sooner or later. Lexi sighed, finding it hard to believe what Oakley had just done, but it didn't stop her from asking, "How's married life?"
She wouldn't say a word about Phil and what they were up to.
Oakley broke into a smile. Lexi couldn't help but stare. She'd never seen Oakely this way. No, she'd always been the rather grim nun type as far as Lexi was concerned. Oakley wasn't one to really be friends with anyone. Lexi always found her rather snooty. Maybe that was because she was just a diligent musician when she wasn't at work.
"Good," Oakley smiled and Lexi was still in shock. Finally, Oakley looked Lexi over. "Oh, quit thinking it can't be true. It is and well, I wouldn't want to be with anyone else."
Lexi remained even lip and took a sip of her chickory hot drink. She was going decaffeinated these days and really she felt as if her energy was zapped.
"So, you and Phil," Oakley mentioned before too many could get there to raid the fridge in the breakroom where everyone was always happy when someone celebrated a birthday...with cupcakes or cookies.
"Oh, he's hesitant about moving in, but a lot of his stuff is there anyway," Lexi shrugged about the matter. "But we're good."
"But, I'm sure..you're his first," Oakley pointed out as she took a sip of tea.
"What's wrong with that?" Suddenly, Lexi looked at her doe-eyed.
"He's so young," Oakley laughed as if he might as well be Bambie that she trying to grow into a buck that only Lexi could control.
It practically made Lexi seethe. Lexi would have never said anything like that to Oakley even when she had her hopes up with that real brother of Boone's. Actually, Lexi knew who her real friends were, and it wasn't Oakley. At least she had Zoey to confide in.
