Where do we go from here

"Don't worry too much about what your mother said," Rylie must have told Melissa this more than once. But things hadn't been the same since they visited Melissa's parents. She guessed it was a mistake now. Maybe it was just too soon.

They'd been so happy together. Now Melissa was so distraught and actually depressed, but  Rylie knew she wouldn't admit it. Funny, how one little thing still hung on in people's minds. Especially, when it hit close to home.

"I know her mother meant well," Rylie confided in Brandon over the phone. It was after Melissa went to sleep. "Sometimes, I think the world is on rewind." She mentioned about all the troubles in the world.

"Well, try not to give up. It'll work out, even if her mom thinks you guys are a mistake," Brandon said he and Declan were having a pretty good summer. He'd even met Melissa's sister Victoria. He reminded her that Victoria thought a lot of her and Melissa together.

"What if her mother is right, you know, about me..not being able to support Melissa?" Yes, that was the bottom line. Oh, she knew the worries. She knew even after all the studying and finding a job had its own difficulties. It certainly wasn't the 1950's. But still, the big picture mattered.

"Just don't think about it. Think about now. Think about what's good at the moment with you two," Brandon told her. "I know plenty of people out there would give anything to have what you and Melissa have. Money can't buy everything."

"I'll try," Ryle wished she had a plan, but she didn't really have one. After all, there were summer classes, working at the Maker's Space, and the summer reading program. Really, being with Melissa was like having a vacation in her busy schedule. She'd hoped they could have gone camping by now. There were so many outdoor things she wanted to do but never had the time. Now it felt bleaker than ever.

She didn't want this to be the end of them, but what if it was? What if they just drifted apart after her mother's harsh words. Oh, there was the big landscape of life to study. Hadn't Brandon known about this? Of course, she thought this after they said their goodbyes and hung up.

Rylie nursed her bottom lip as she went to clean the fridge. She just had to organize something. Really, she needed to think of something to make this right before it was too late.

  3. I hope things work out for them. That has to be tough. and what parents say- even if they're wrong- can have such a huge impact. So true about everything feeling like it's going backwards...

  4. Poor Rylie. What you say is so true: "Funny, how one little thing still hung on in people's minds. Especially, when it hit close to home." Even when we're all grown up, it's hard not to be gutted by even the smallest degree of our parents' disapproval. That said, Brandon gives Rylie good advice about Melissa. In the immortal words of INXS, all we have is this moment.

Vibrant collage, one of your best yet. :)

I'm so glad that my recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle reference could remind you of that story from your childhood. Which was, by the way, hilarious. I hope it had a happy ending!

Finally, that totally sucks about your COVID scare. I think I'd have a hard time too trying to figure out how to give myself the test. As weird as it sounds, it's good that you're a pro at it now. Stay safe and healthy out there. :)

You always make me think, our parents always want the best for their children, but are they always right?
