Don't like all this distance

"Oh, are you sure that's all it is?" Yuki couldn't think of anything else to say to Jen, who looked like she might be on sick leave instead of winter vacation.

True, one winter storm after another. It was suddenly hitting them hard. Even Melissa and Riley couldn't return to their little Iowa town so they stayed with Yuki and Em, even missed the Iowa Caucus. They knew who would win.

"I dunno," Jen looked rather glum, speaking of Amy. "She's not talking to me."

"How are you and Stan?" Yuki wanted to know as she was going through Stan's kitchen to see if there was anything she could help tidy up before she left. Naturally, Jen had told the two to help themselves with anything they wanted.

Yuki had made hot tea and Melissa found some leftover Christmas cookies.

"Maybe..maybe you are just overthinking," Yuki wished Jen could take it easy and let Amy lead the way, but she knew they clashed about everything. "Perhaps, you two are too much alike."

"Alike? Are you kidding me?" She winced hard.

"Well, mothers and daughters hardly get along," Melissa shrugged. She would know. She said it had never been easy with her mother. "Sure you can read all the lovely novels you want on the matter, but they often don't get along. You just have to keep trying."

Yuki was glad that Melissa had come along. She knew Jen too. They'd been to her house plenty of times. It just felt different now to see them somewhere else. Especially, at Stan's.

She looked around the house. He'd certainly made it a home for Amy. He'd been a single father and was always there to raise Amy in the thick of it when Jen chose not to.

"Why now?" Yuki wanted to know why Jen cared about Amy so suddenly.

"I guess, I don't want her to hate me," Jen did look distraught, "But it seems the more I'm here the less she wants to do with me."

"You know, how you've been, sticking her with us when it was your weekend to be with her. It's a lot for her to handle now. She's used to a certain routine, she needs her space," Yuki told her.

Jen remained straight-lipped.

"Look, something's got to give. You need to find some common ground." Yuki was serious, but she didn't think Jen was listening. "Talk to her. Tell her how things were for you when you were her age. Maybe if she knows of your troubles, she can somehow relate."

Jen only sighed. It was as if she was ready for a bottle of wine and wanted to be alone.

  1. Failing to communicate well in personal relationships is the saddest way for small distances to become the Grand Canyon in a relationship.

  2. Communication, common language is important. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out.

  4. The storms keep coming... just like in real life! I feel like January has been one big snowstorm! Poor Jen. She's hearing something she needs to hear, but it's still hard.

  8. So much turmoil for Jen! I feel badly that things aren't going well with her daughter, even if she's largely to blame. I like Yuki's suggestion that Jen talk to Amy about when she herself was young. Bridging the generational gap always helps youngsters relate. πŸ‘©‍πŸ‘§❓πŸ’—πŸ’
